Ever notice how easy it is to get so wrapped up in something, that it’s all you think about? Whether it’s that new car, repainting the house, clean-eating or that perfect swimsuit body, it’s easy to get consumed by
stuff. Especially around Christmas and New Years, your mind is going a mile a minute to remember if you got a present for so-and-so, did I send a Christmas card to that family, what time is the Christmas celebration with your family, call and schedule the makeup session of gymnastics, what is a healthy appetizer to take to that party and on and on. When at Christmas we should not be thinking of stuff anyway and instead on the exact reason for celebration – Jesus’ birth! When we take a close look at our lives, what does it show our priorities to be? Do we want our children to follow in our footsteps of materialism and busy-ness? Do we squeeze in the advent story at night leading up to Christmas and expect that to make it all better? What New Year’s resolution continues the plague of “flesh” instead of the “freedom” that comes with Christ?
“Whatever overcomes a person, to that he/she is enslaved.” 2 Peter 2:19
“All things are lawful for me, but I will not be enslaved by anything.” I Corinthians 6:12
I, Kate, ponder these verses Luke wrote down as I start 2015. While these can all be good things, let’s make sure we do it all in moderation, and to the glory of God. What habits will I continue and what new ones are crucial to looking more like Christ? Do I want to take care of what God has given me – eat well, instill healthy habits, exercise? Absolutely! But I hope to do it in the light of Jesus, instead of in the shadow of the world’s view of how it should be done. Many blessings to you in 2015!
